Okay, so I at first I was going to do like ‘Top Songs by White Pop Girlies That Slap” but I believe in diversity. And I know this sentiment has faded a bit but I know people who only listen to “good” music and that does not include pop music and, most likely, rap music. Sidebar: If you don’t listen to any Black music especially rap, you are racist. I’m so sorry. Them the rules.
And also, every single one of these songs makes me cry. I’m not joking! Like if I think too hard about the lyrics and I’m dancing and I’m sweating and I’m alive, I WILL START CRYING.
Pop music digs deep into the inner core of beings, bubbling up feelings of freedom. Your body free of hurt, disease, pain, trauma. It wakes up a primal, sexual and desirous energy that makes me feel whole for the first time in my life. You feel as if you can conquer the world (“Run The World “by Beyonce). You’re in a movie and the camera is swirling around the dance floor and you’re the main character and god loves you. And nothing beats the feeling of the moment for drunken obliteration, dancefloor is heavy and a pure jam is suddenly played. The electricity that pulsates from you to your friend, your lover, a person that you don’t know grooving on the same wavelength!
In no particular order but “Cool for the Summer” consistently makes me want to rail lines of coke:
“Cool for the Summer” by Demi Lovato. — The absolutely wild beat drop spins into a fury unlike any other. I mean she said “Don't be scared, 'cause I'm your body type.” and I have no clue what that really means but yes, I agree I am your body type!
“Hand To Myself” by Selena Gomez — She really can’t sing but she starts off the song with a raspy soft and sexy voice— you’re metaphorical gin and juice— the tambourine is keeping time and then the chorus introduces us to the beat and then the next verse drops back down to a backbeat that tight against her mellow tones.
“Look What You Made Me Do” by Taylor Swift — This is a song where a white woman pretends that she is being tough and it rattles me to my core. And the whole voicemail line is incredibly. Taylor Swift in her vengeful white woman era, slaying!
“I’m a Slave 4 U” by Britney Spears — OKAY I KNOW BUT THIS BEAT!! THE VIDEO PIERCES THROUGH MY MEMORY LIKE THE MISSILES!!
“Teenage Dream” by Katy Perry — A classic that makes one feel as if, when they were a teenager, they could have had sex. And it would have been on a cloud. And you would have looked so hot.
“Applause” by Lady Gaga — It’s all about her ID— and some of us deserve applause (me)!
“Sweetest Pie” by Dua Lipa & Megan Thee Stallion — The lyric: “You got me hung up from across the room / I'm so high that I'm on another altitude” is a transcendent moment of clarity in a song that has about nine different metaphors.
“Sweet Nothing” by Florence Welch & Calvin Harris — I feel like this song should be used in a TV show about woman doing Gone Girl on their exes.
“Latch” by Sam Smith & Disclosure — The EDM-inspired track makes me want to do molly and be gay!
“Diamonds” by Rihanna — Feels like you’re floating in space towards a beautiful diamond-filled destiny!
Bonus Tracks:
“Levitating” by Dua Lipa
“You’re So Hot You’re Hurting My Feelings” by Caroline Polachek
“Dogs Days are over by Florence + The Machine
(all these songs are MOSTLY by white women which should say something— i don’t have enough brain cells to try and make a cogent point about it but the songs slap go forth and listen)
